First
Slot Machine Parlor in Maine
Hollywood Slots at Bangor just
celebrated its one year anniversary. The
slot machine casino has brought in more
than 860,000 gamblers as well as more
than half a billion dollars in wagers
over the year. The state and the city
were not expecting such a turnout, and
they have received over $17 million on
their portion of the slot machine
revenue alone.
The
casino has 475 slot machines, a small
bar and restaurant, and not much else.
They are operating in a temporary
establishment, and hope to expand at
some point. Those that were in support
of the casino say that it has already
brought in over 130 jobs, as well as the
fact that it keeps the slot machine
revenue in Maine that the gamblers would
have played in other states.
There
were those that said that by bringing in
slot machines there would be a huge
increase in crime and gambling
addiction, but so far that does not seem
to be the case. Although the police have
been called out somewhat frequently to
the casino, it is mostly for traffic
accidents. The gambling hotline said
that they have not seen a significant
increase in callers either. It seems
that bringing in slot machines was a
good thing for Bangor, and not the
catastrophe that others said it would
be.
