Strickland Anti-Slot
Machines
Gubernatorial candidate Ted Strickland
is against bringing slot machines into
the state of Ohio. He knows that there
is an education problem, as well as a
tax problem, but he does not think that
slot machines are the answer. As every
candidate does at one point or another,
he said that he was not going to raise
taxes, and not bring in slot machines.
Many wonder where the money will come
from.
At an open forum recently, said, “With
the current knowledge available I will
not raise taxes.” He also said that he
had a plan called the “Turn Around Ohio
Plan,” which focuses on many of the
areas that the slot machines are
supposed to fix. One major issue that
slot machine funding was supposed to go
to was the growing educational cost in
Ohio to attend a state school. His
opponent, current Secretary of State Ken
Blackwell says that Strickland has an
empty agenda and does not know what it
takes to run a state, and thinks that
Strickland shouldn’t be so quick to
dismiss funding opportunities like slot
machines.
Strickland did say that although he did
not feel slot machines were the answer,
he did say that the average cost of
education in Ohio was 45% higher than
the national average. He wants to find a
way to make education affordable without
resorting to slot machines coming into
the state. "If the people of Ohio make
the decision to support this initiative,
of course, I will follow the directive,
but I think this is a questionable
provision to put this into our state's
constitution. As I understand, the funds
generated from slot machines will only
be available to the top five percent of
students …Those students will be
receiving scholarships anyway," he said.
