Machines Sold at Auction
Illegal
slot machines that were seized during a
raid were auctioned off on November 3rd
with the proceeds going to the Hillsdale
County Sheriff’s Department. The slot
machine auction ended up bringing in
more than $11,000 for the department,
which was much more than they thought
they would get for the machines.
The sheriff’s department was very clear
that whoever purchased the slot machines
had to use them for “amusement purposes”
and that using them for wagering or
payouts was illegal, and they would be
seized from their owners if it was
discovered that they were using them for
illegal purposes. There were sixteen
slot machines up for auction.
The slot machines were seized during a
raid on an illegal gambling operation in
October of 2006. The machines averaged
$375 each. The sheriff’s department said
that the money taken in from the sale of
the slot machines would be used for
purchasing equipment for the department.
If the items had been seized as part of
a specific drug raid it would have gone
into a special fund, otherwise it goes
into a general fund that they can pull
from in order to fund special requests.
The department was pleased that they got
115 registered bidders and was second
only in attendance to the auction they
held for guns.
