Regrets Follow Slot Machine Vote
Worcester
County Commissioner Bobby Cowger is
regretting his choice to oppose slot
machines. Just last week the County
Commission voted to oppose slot
machines, and Cowger wishes he could get
his vote back as he feels that he made a
mistake. He says that he thought county
leaders opposed slot machines, but now
he wants to rescind his vote.
Many thought that the letter really
didn’t have any pull, as it was the
state government that was making the
decision and that a County Commission
wouldn’t really have any say in the
decision. Cowger says that he voted no
as he believed that the Mayor of
Pocomoke was anti-slot machines, and
ended up being the swing vote in the
decision.
However, Maryland had voted to remove
slot machines from Ocean Downs and move
the location to Frederick County. Now
they have reversed that decision. They
were claiming that Frederick County
would make more money than Ocean Downs,
but no one seems to be listening. Now
Cowger says that although he himself is
not anti-slot machines he voted as he
thought people wanted, but then when
asking around, the people actually said
that they wanted slot machines.
Others said that although they would
have liked to have seen slot machines in
the county, their constituents were very
clear about not wanting slots so they
had to vote against them. It looks as
though there will be a referendum next
fall, but as it will be statewide the
county will not really get a say in the
matter.
