No on
Slot Machines
Surprisingly enough, the residents of
Scarborough Downs have decided that they
do not want slot machines in their town.
The harness race track had spent the
last few months trying to convince the
town that adding in slot machines was in
their best interest, but it would seem
that they were unsuccessful.
In a narrow vote, 5,804 to 5,565,
residents said not to the slot machines.
Only 239 votes separated the yes’ from
the no’s, and slot machines were
defeated.
The harness track has been trying hard
to get slot machines at their location
as they say that they cannot compete
with other tracks that do have slot
machines. They say that they need the
additional income that comes from the
slot machines, as they just aren’t
making it on their own.
The agriculture industry had been
lobbying for them as well, as they say
that if the track closes they will be in
serious trouble as well. They say that
most people don’t realize how much they
depend on the track being successful and
if they were to close there would be
more jobs lost than just the ones at the
track.
The track said that they needed the slot
machines to boost their purses, thus
making them more viable as a track in
the state. However, with residents
disagreeing, it is not known what the
track will do now.
