Machines Coming to Tracks
With
Maryland’s voters approving slot
machines in the state, the government is
going to be looking at a new revenue
source. Marylanders agreed on Tuesday
that slot machines would be legalized in
the state, thus bringing in more money
for many under-funded programs.
The state will still have enough
problems figuring out how to make it
with so many problems in the nation’s
economy holding them back. But with the
influx of revenue coming in from the
slot machines, they will be able to
increase funds to the racetracks and
increase education funding.
With the new slot machine revenue the
state will be able to make up the
difference in the $350 million budget
shortfall, and be able to increase
spending on K-12 education. The state is
counting on the slot machines bringing
in $1.36 million by 2013, with more than
$660 million going to the schools.
Supporters of the slot machines say that
as there is currently roughly $400
million going over their border annually
to Delaware and West Virginia’s slot
machines, that money will now stay in
state and boost their economy instead.
They say that they don’t even know how
much money is going to Pennsylvania and
New York in addition to the other two
states, but they expect that this amount
will stay in house as well.
With the pro slot machine group able to
raise so much more money than the anti
slot machine group, it was clear that
one side had the upper hand in the
fight. With handouts going out that made
Marylanders believe that they would be
vetoing money for schools, it was a
tough fight to win.
