Maryland
Says Yes to Slot Machines
They said
it couldn’t be done – but it was. Slot
machines are now legal in Maryland, a
state in which many said that would not
happen. The state is thrilled as they
say that they needed the money in order
to survive the economic crisis that they
and every other state are facing, and
this will definitely help with that.
More than 61% of voters decided that
slot machines at Rocky Gap State Park
would be a good idea, and because of
that roughly 15,000 slot machines will
be moved into there and four other
locations across the state.
The Chamber of Commerce says that it
isn’t just about the money that will
come in as a direct result of the slot
machines; it is also about the amount of
tourism that will be coming in as well.
As people come in to play the slot
machines they will find themselves
spending money in other areas as well.
They say that it will be a boon to the
state’s overall economy.
Initial reports say that by 2013 the
slot machines could generate $660
million each year for the state’s
coffers. Plus they could be looking at
an immediate $90 million from the sale
of licenses. Some were afraid that by
bringing them in so close to West
Virginia’s Charles Town Races and Slots
that the competition will have to decide
which slot machine casino to go to.
However, Penn National says that they
supported the move for Maryland to bring
in slot machines, and that they would
like to be considered for an approved
site in Cecil County.
