Tribes Need to
Reap Benefits
The
ability to win at slot machines might be
caused by
random number generation, but there
is nothing random about the fact that
online gambling could become legal in
the
United States
and not everyone is happy about the
prospect. There are many that are
concerned that the rate of addiction
could become staggering for all of those
playing, but there is another group that
is concerned for a different reason.
There
is some concern among the Indian tribes
that if online gambling becomes
legalized that they are going to see
much of their slot machine revenues go
to other casinos. They are right to be
concerned for there is a real danger of
that happening. The problem is that if
they do allow the online gaming world to
become legal, those people who felt that
they had to travel to the tribal casinos
in order to play their slots will now
get whatever they need from the
internet. This could cause a lot of
troubles for the tribes.
The tribes make their money off of the
money that comes from the slots and if
these casino games go public, so to
speak, they will lose the very money
that keeps their tribes functioning. The
tribes want certain provisions put into
the bills that would allow them to keep
their way of life and they are right to
be concerned about how this is going to
affect them. Not only could they lose
their rights under the law that pertains
to their tax status, but they could lose
a chunk of their income. Adding to their
concerns is the fact that many of the
name brand casinos will likely enter the
market and they will draw the most
traffic as players will recognize them.
This will be hard for these seemingly
“no name” tribal casinos to compete
with. They might have local traffic but
even then those that know them might be
tempted to try something different. No
matter how you look at it, it does not
look as though it will be good news for
the tribes.
