Dueling Newspapers
Newspapers often come out in support of
various laws, bills, even presidential
candidates, so it is no surprise that
Maryland’s newspapers would be talking
about whether or not to allow slot
machines in the state. The Washington
Post and the Baltimore Sun are split as
to whether legalization of slot machines
is a good idea or not.
On November 4th, voters will decide
whether or not to legalize slot
machines, which will restrict the influx
of the machines to give locations. These
sites cannot have more than 15,000 slot
machines collectively. The newspapers
have decided to comment on the issue
with both releasing editorials
discussing the merits and problems with
the slot machines. Both newspapers are
very vehement in their causes.
The Washington Post is against the slot
machines, calling them a "neon mirage
that will pump money into the pockets of
out-of-state racehorse owners and casino
operators." The Baltimore Sun is pro
slot machines and they say that they are
the best way to boost Maryland’s sagging
economy. They say that the support of
education and health care will
drastically fall without the slot
machines.
With Maryland looking at a budget
shortfall of $432 million, healthcare,
higher education and transportation have
already started seeing the hits. The
governor just cut from those programs
$297 million. With the economy
continuing the way it has, one can be
assured that this is only the beginning
of the cuts and that it will get worse
before it gets better.
