Tax Study
The city
has been discussing how they might be
able to make even more money off of the
slot machine and gambling industry –
simply by raising their taxes. The
report states that there are a lot more
ways that the city could be benefiting
from all of the money that the slot
machines are bringing in, and that they
need to be explored.
They are talking about possibly taxing
lottery tickets, slot machine winnings,
or taking a portion of the entry fee at
Woodbine racetrack. Each of the ideas
would bring in more money for the track,
and could be used in conjunction with
each other.
The report doesn’t call for anything to
happen right away, but they are looking
at things to get done. Those that are in
favor of the slot machine and gambling
tax say that they would like to see it
discussed at next week’s meeting.
Some say that an additional tax would be
legally and logistically difficult to
enforce and implement, but proponents
say that this just isn’t true. They say
that the report was written in a way so
that people would write it off and
ignore it, but they are determined to
see it come to light.
They say that the amount of money that
could come from such a tax is
heartening, especially in this day and
age when money is so tight. They say
that people are going to be more
receptive to a slot machine tax than
they were to the new vehicle and land
transfer taxes that were levied last
year.
