Laurel
Park Competition
All signs
are pointing to Laurel Park getting the
slot machines that are destined to come
to Maryland. Voters will get a chance
this Election Day to decide if slot
machines are to be legalized or not, and
many are placing bets as to where they
might go if they are.
Anne Arundel County is on the short list
to get the slot machines, and it would
seem that Laurel Park would be the
obvious choice for those machines.
Millions of dollars of revenue would be
going to the track and its purses, so it
only seems to make sense that they would
get to host them as well.
It was previously thought that a large
portion of the slot machine revenue was
going to education; however, it would
seem that the major benefactor of the
slot machines will actually be the horse
racing industry. They say that they
cannot compete in a world of horse
racing without them.
Voters will simply be deciding if slot
machines can be placed within two miles
of the Baltimore-Washington Parkway.
They will not be deciding if Laurel Park
specifically will be getting them.
Laurel Park is considered the front
runner in the slot machine race;
however, there are other options. There
is Baltimore City, Worcester County,
Cecil County, and Allegany County in the
running as well.
