Slots Groups Backed by Horses
If you
want someone behind you when you are
trying to fight for slot machines look
no further than your local racetrack.
The chaps over there are looking to get
slot machines in their backyard and they
will fund you however you want just so
long as you are working for them not
against them.
According to a recent report filed with
the State Board of Elections, the pro
slot machine group Maryland For Our
Future has raised more money than those
that are against the slot machines – by
a large amount. They have raised almost
$3.8 million – and guess where a lot of
that money is coming from?
You guessed it, the horse racing and
gambling interest groups have been
working hard to keep them funded. They
might be talking up the benefits of slot
machines and how it relates to education
– but make no mistake – those who are
funding will be profiting as well. Their
biggest donors have been the Laurel
Racing Association and Penn National
Gaming.
Experts say that the stakes are high for
the groups as it takes a lot to fight
for something like this. There are a lot
of negative messages out there about
slot machines, but when it comes down to
it – the state really does need some
sort of cash influx. They are quick to
point out that slot machines may not be
that source, but they are bound to get
the job done.
Those against the slot machines say that
it isn’t fair that they should be
allowed to accept that much money. They
say that they have an important message
to get out and that the campaigning for
slot machines should be limited to what
both groups can reasonably afford to
raise. They say that without large
gaming groups behind them they just
can’t compete in the slot machine fight.
