Gives Slot Machines the Go Ahead
There was talk as
well as legislation in the California
state government that would allow their
tribes to get additional slot machines.
There has been an ongoing argument that
says that the tribes should be allowed
more slot machines without changing the
existing compacts that they have with
the state. The tribes have argued that
under ex Gov. Gray Davis they should
have been allowed additional slot
machines because of the compacts that
they signed with him.
The court has decided that the tribes
are correct. According to the Ninth
United States Circuit Court of Appeals,
the tribes are permitted additional slot
machine licenses. The court said that
California must offer these licenses for
10,549 more slot machines, and it must
be done within the next week.
Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger had tried to
get the tribes to give more of their
slot machine profits to the state in
return for getting these extra slot
licenses but a federal judge in
Sacramento had already said that they
did not feel that that was either fair
or nor lawful.
Many residents were hoping that the
tribes would be required to give the
state more money for the slot machines
as they feel that the amount that they
are giving the state now is not
necessarily a fair deal. They felt that
more money was needed for education
within the state, and may feel that
since the tribes are making billions of
dollars a year off of the slot machines,
and off of the states residents, that
they should turn over more of their
profits. Needless to say the tribes are
overjoyed and cannot wait for their new
licenses to be issued.
