Against Slot Machines
The racetracks in New
Jersey have long wanted to bring in slot
machines to boost their sales. They say
that they need the money in order to
survive, and that by bringing in slot
machines it would enable them to compete
with the other tracks that already have
them. The problem is that they are in a
state that is now surrounded by other
states also offering slot machines and
they are allowing their tracks to offer
them.
However, New Jersey has long maintained
that if you’re going to have slot
machines you’re going to have them in
Atlantic City. The casinos in Atlantic
City have long opposed the tracks
bringing in any form of slot machines as
they say that it would hurt their
industry drastically. Now with
surrounding states also offering slot
machines and, in some cases, table games
as well, the casinos are really hurting
for money.
The casinos give money to the tracks
every year in the form of millions and
millions of dollars because they know
that the tracks need assistance.
However, they argue that if the tracks
were to get slot machines it would
damage the casino industry beyond
repair.
Gov. Jon Corzine says that he will
oppose slot machines at the racetracks
if it were to come up for a vote. He
says that if you were elected to a
second term within the state, there is
no way he would ever agree to allow the
tracks to have slot machines. This of
course has angered the racetracks as
they feel they have just as much of a
right to have them as the casinos do,
but for now there is no sign of slot
machines coming in.
