Indiana Could
See Significant Drop in Revenue
Every time you turn around another
state is looking to add slot machines to
their lineup. The various states across
the US think that by adding in slot
machines there is going to be a large
increase in the amount of revenue the
state gets. They are then planning on
taking this money and applying it
towards their budget shortfalls but this
is never a good idea.
Depending on slot machine revenue to
fund important projects is never a good
idea because you can't count on the
amount of money that you will get from
the slot machines on a regular basis.
Those states that first brought in slot
machines saw the millions and billions
of dollars that they can make from them,
but then as other states brought in slot
machines as well the negative impact saw
their revenue drastically drop.
Indiana is just starting to see this
now. Both Kentucky and Ohio are
considering legalizing slot machines
within their states, and if they do this
the state of Indiana could conceivably
lose more than $200 million a year in
slot machine revenue.
According to the state's Legislative
Services Agency, these two states would
drastically impact the amount of revenue
that is brought in by at least $200
million, and it could be more. This
means that projects that are currently
funded by the slot machine revenue would
be left without that extra money.
Indiana currently has 13 slot machine
casinos across their state and they
bring in roughly $900 million a year in
both state and local taxes. But with
Ohio and Kentucky breeding in slot
machines they could easily see that
revenue drop by 25%, possibly more.
