Maryland Near
to Issuance
It looks as though Maryland is finally
ready to award the state’s first slot
machine gambling license to the Ocean
Downs racetrack. The owner of the track
is simply thrilled that they will be
getting it, as they say that this will
give them plenty of opportunity to have
the slot machines up and running before
Memorial Day weekend. This of course
marks a major milestone in this state,
as years have passed since they first
attempted to bring slot machines in and
get them legalized.
Many are wondering if it will actually
happen, especially since there are still
uncertainties remaining about whether or
not other locations will work. Voters
had approved several locations
throughout the state to bring in slot
machines, but now there seems to be
problems with a few of them. One of the
biggest problems is the location in Anne
Arundel County. Originally slated as a
popular location, now it seems as though
residents are having a hard time
allowing the slot machines in.
The site of the slot machines would
actually be close to a mall in the area,
and residents are concerned that this
will affect whether or not they actually
approve of them coming in. They thought
that the slot machine location was
actually going to be further out, but
the new plans show it as being much
closer than originally believed.
They are concerned that the close
proximity of the slot machines to the
mall will not only bring in excessive
amounts of traffic to the area, making
what is already a congested area even
worse, but that the slot machines will
lead to crime at the mall which is a
popular hangout for their teenagers.
