Postpones Cut
Gov. Strickland in the
state of Ohio wants his citizens to see
that slot machines really would be good
for the state. He wants to reduce the
income tax in order to help out his
residents. Wednesday morning he endorsed
a postponement of the reduction however,
because slot machines may not come into
the state.
The governor’s plan was to bring in slot
machines and reduce the income tax rate
for those who live there. This would
also allow money to come in for
education and various infrastructure
improvements that need to happen across
the state. However after a recent court
ruling, the courts decided that the slot
machines needed to be voted on by the
people of the state, thus reducing the
possibility of it passing.
The court said that residents have the
right to decide whether or not they had
slot machines within their state.
However, with many residents not wanting
slot machines it is impossible for the
governor to put forth the scheduled tax
break that he had wanted to give them.
Instead, they are facing an $851 million
shortfall in education funding, and no
way of fixing that.
He said that instead of being able to
reduce income tax residents would be
facing a tax bill that is roughly $90
larger than what it is now. He said he
has two choices, either increase income
taxes or lay off teachers and suspend
athletic programs. Neither of these
choices would be necessary however, if
slot machines were legalized in this
state.
