New Hampshire
Looking to Future of Gambling
It is
no secret that there is a real division
when it comes to expanding gambling in
the state of New Hampshire. There are
many that are uncomfortable with the
idea of bringing in slot machines, and
then there are others that think it is
the best possible thing they could do.
They know that there is a lot of money
that could come into the state as a
result of the expansion in gambling, but
for those opposed they say that there is
a lot of crime that could come with it
as well. This is where the two sides
cannot meet, and the push for approval
of the slot machines has gotten rather
heated at times.
But
this past week a New Hampshire panel
requested to hear from Millennium Gaming
owner Bill Wortman in regards to
bringing in the slot machines. The
House Ways
and Means subcommittee is working on a
bill that would allow two casinos to
come into the state and with them up to
10,000 slot machines total – 5,000 at
each casino. The licenses would be given
out to two different companies, and
there are a lot of questions that have
come up in regards to the legalization
of the games.
So
they have called upon Wortman to present
his ideas to the committee as he has
already stated that he is interested in
opening one of the casinos once the slot
machines are legalized. In addition, the
panel is asking Clyde Barrow, the
Director of the Center for Policy
Analysis to get his perspective on the
slots as well.
