Millions Will Be Addicted to Gambling

According to a recent study, it looks like the number of gambling addicts in the UK is nearing the one million mark. The British Gambling Prevalence Study is now showing that they are nearing a real problem with gambling in their country, and that as many as one in 50 adults is seriously and hopelessly addicted to gambling.

The last study, done in 1999, showed that 72% of the population had gambled at some point, and that 0.9% of them were addicted to gambling. The new study predicts that 2% of the 40 million who now gamble regularly are seriously addicted.

Support groups have increased as well, and they say that they have found over the years more and more people asking for help. GamCare says that last year the number of calls that they received had gone up 34% from the year before. They say that with the additional ways of gambling, you get additional gambling addicts.

The Gambling Commission says that they believe that there are roughly 235,000 gambling machines in Britain today, and that many of them are slot machines – which are considered to be the most addictive form of gambling available today. There are new games as well that are becoming popular called Fobtes, which are Fixed Odds Betting Terminals – and with this addition experts fear how quickly gambling addiction will become an even bigger problem.
