New
Hampshire Paying Connecticut
According
to the latest estimates, New Hampshire
residents are paying the state of
Connecticut roughly $11 million a year
for their treasury. The New England
Gaming Research Project at the
University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth
has discovered that with all of the
residents of NH heading over the state
line to play the slot machines, they are
giving Connecticut a nice chunk of
change each year.
Roughly $85 million was spent by NH
residents on Conn. slot machines, and
the $11 million is just the taxes on
that money that the state collects.
Considering that there are 13,200 slot
machines in the state between Foxwoods
and Mohegan Sun, as well as the hotels,
etc. that they stay at – it is quite
lucrative for the state to be in the
gambling business.
The study found that the slot machines
at Foxwoods are averaging $326 a day,
and the slot machines at Mohegan Sun are
averaging $416 a day – higher than
anywhere else in the county. The
Millennium Group is estimating that if
they add slot machines to Rockingham
Park and make it a racing that they
would be looking at somewhere around
$403 million a year in annual gaming
revenues, or $365 a day.
Experts say that they may be
overestimating the amount of money that
the slot machines would bring in at the
racino, but based on the figures of the
other two casinos, it may not be that
far out of the park. They say that if
Maine goes ahead and adds slot machines
near NH, all of those numbers could
easily drop.
There is also talk of Massachusetts
adding slot machines to two locations,
which would negatively affect existing
casinos as well. With word coming down
this week from their governor as to
whether or not they will add slot
machines, everyone else could be looking
at some serious belt tightening.
