Slot Machine Agreement Met
Eddie Lockett has done something others
have wanted to see done, but were unable
to bring to fruition. Lockett has
brokered a lease agreement between the
Navajo Nation and three other Arizona
tribes. This will ultimately lead to an
increase in slot machine revenue for all
of the tribes.
Per the law, tribes that don’t have a
casino, or have more slot machines than
they can use, can lease them out to
another tribe. These other tribes have
used all of their allotted slot machines
and are seeking ways of making more
money – so they lease from the tribes
their extra or unused slot machines.
The tribe that is leasing the slot
machines pays a portion of the revenue
to the tribe they are leasing them from.
Each agreement is different, how much
the tribes give back is up to those
making the agreement.
This particular lease led to the usage
of more than 1,000 slot machines being
divvied up among the various tribes –
who will then pay the Navajo a
percentage. In this case, the Navajo
Nation is opening their own casino, but
had a surplus of licensed slot machines.
The extra slot machines were divided up
between the Tohono O’odham, Gila River,
and Fort McDowell Yavapai Apache tribes.
