Disabled Gamblers Taken Care Of
Sometimes
casinos forget that their disabled
patrons are just as likely to lose a
large sum of money in their slot
machines as those that are not disabled.
What happens is that when a disabled
gambler tries to get to the slot
machines they cannot for the stools
block their way. This makes it
impossible for them to take part in the
fun.
However, the Meadows Racetrack and
Casino is taking care of their disabled
patrons and making it easier for them to
gamble at the slot machines. They have
wheelchairs available for those that
need them once inside, and they have the
rows of slot machines wide enough so
that the wheelchairs and scooters that
many patrons use can get around easily.
Meadows is not the only one of course,
there are many casinos across the nation
trying to make slot machine playing a
little easier for those with
disabilities. Experts say that this
group has gone for so long not being
noticed that it is nice to see that the
casinos are finally taking steps to
include them.
But the Meadows went one further than
the other casinos did. They petitioned
the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board in
regards to the stools in front of the
slot machines. The law says that there
must have seats rooted in the ground in
front of all the slot machines. It is
meant as a safety measure in case of
fire, but it makes it impossible for
disabled patrons to get to the machine.
They argued that it was discriminatory
against those with disabilities. Right
now it is left that if you cannot get to
the slot machine you have to call
someone who will remove the seat with an
Allen wrench, and some are embarrassed
to do that – especially if they want to
move from machine to machine. The board
agreed and is allowing them to put in a
different kind of seat so that those
that are wheelchair bound can play the
slot machines too.
