Lawsuit Should Be Tossed
Attorneys for the state of Maryland
think that a recent lawsuit against the
state for the wording of the slot
machine referendum should be thrown out.
They say that the language is exactly as
it should be, and changes are not
necessary.
Slot machine opponents filed suit
against the state last week stating that
the language on the referendum that
voters would be deciding upon come fall
was unclear. They said that it only
tells them that the proceeds will go
towards education instead of listing all
of the places that it will actually go –
like to horse racing purses, etc.
However, the state says that this is
exactly how it should be worded per the
legislation that was approved by the
General Assembly. They say that the
wording properly sums up the
constitutional amendment in the first of
the two bills. One of the bills would
make it an amendment; while the other
deals with the implementation of the
slot machines should they be approved.
They said that the wording in the second
bill is made up by the state’s
non-partisan Department of Legislative
Services. They also said that a copy of
the summary will be mailed to voters a
week before voting so they can review
it. They said that it gives “voters a
clear and understandable view of the
proposed video lottery amendment.”
