Maryland Debate Wages On
Public
opinion is very divided these days as
half of the population seems to think
that slot machines are a good idea,
while others don’t. The governor wants
slot machines to correct the problems
that they are having with their budget,
while fighting those that say the slots
will simply lead to corruption and the
state’s downfall.
Slot machine proponents are bound and
determined to get them legalized and
have literally hired an army to help
them do so. They have more than 200
canvassers out there who have already
reached more than 340,000 homes. They
have received 12,000 requests for yard
signs and have an extensive advertising
campaign in the works.
Add all of this to the fact that
Governor Martin O’Malley is visibly
promoting slot machines as well and you
have a successful campaign in the
making. O’Malley has been raising money
for the effort behind the scenes,
hitting up big supporters for thousands
of dollars.
However, despite all of the pressure to
legalize the slot machines, there has
been a drop in popular support for them.
Slot machines are still more popular
than not with 58% in favor, but this is
down 6 points from earlier estimates.
Experts say that anti slot machine
groups are gaining ground in their fight
to keep the 15,000 slot machines out of
the state. Those for the slots say that
they cannot take anything for granted
and that they have to keep fighting the
good fight.
