Misinformation Regarding Slot Machines

Information was sent out recently to California residents stating that soon it would be legal to have online gambling for slot machines. However, experts say that this is not the case, and that the information that was distributed was actually false.

The group California Charity Bingo Association which is funded by slot machine manufacturer Video Gaming Technology sent out literature that said that California tribes would soon be able to offer online gambling. It said that recent legislation that was authorizing remote caller bingo essentially made online slots and gambling legal

The legislation that they are referring to is SB136 which only allows online technology to be used in the casino. It limits internet wagering to the broadcast of live bingo games to these remote locations. You have to be in the bingo hall, and wagers and prize awards are not allowed via the internet.

As online gambling is prohibited under federal law, neither the charities nor the tribes can offer it. The bill simply allows remote caller bingo which is a better game than traditional bingo. It allows for higher pot amounts, which is why California charities and non profit groups are behind the passage of the bill.
