Machine Referendum On Track
The
Maryland Court of Appeals has affirmed a
lower court ruling in regards to the
slot machine referendum, clearing the
way for a vote in November. Anti slot
machine groups were hoping to get the
referendum blocked on a wording issue –
but their hopes were thwarted with the
upholding of an earlier case.
The ruling says that the Anne Arundel
Circuit Court was correct in telling the
state that they had to change the
wording of the slot machine referendum.
They wanted it to say that education was
the “primary” purpose for having the
machines.
Opponents said that voters should be
aware that some of the proceeds from the
slot machines would be going toward the
racing industry and the state lottery.
They said that the way it was worded,
this was unclear and misleading.
The attorney general has said that the
case is solved and that all parties need
to accept the ruling and move forward
with making their cases for and against
slot machines to the public. He said
that the opponents of slot machines have
now lost four times in court and that
they need to move on.
