Wording Tells a Different Tale
A recent
lawsuit brought about in regards to
wording on a slot machine referendum is
in the news. It seems that there is some
confusion in regards to how the wording
in the new slot machine referendum
should read. There are some that think
that the way the money allocation is
worded is unclear and needs to be
cleaned up.
Attorney Irwin Kramer is responsible for
the lawsuit, stating that the ballot
question needs to be reworded “with
neutral language that fairly and
accurately apprises voters of the true
nature of the issue.” Kramer feels that
the wording is misleading voters as to
how the state is planning on spending
slot machine revenues.
The plaintiffs are hoping that the Anne
Arundel County Court will prohibit state
elections officers from certifying the
ballot language. This will force the
secretary of state to revise the
question.
This is not Kramer’s first attempts at
bringing suit in reference to the slot
machines. He tried to get last year’s
special session overturned where the
referendum idea was approved. The
lawsuit was unsuccessful and so Kramer
moved to his next lawsuit. These
attempts are simply to keep slot
machines illegal, but he is fighting a
losing battle.
Two other anti slot machine groups have
signed onto the lawsuit as well, but as
many experts say – if the general public
wants slot machines, they are going to
approve them. If they don’t, then Kramer
has nothing to worry about.
