Slot Machines
Destroyed
There
is nothing sadder than seeing a slot
machine destroyed, just ask any slots
player. However when citizens think that
they can run their own illegal slot
machine gambling hall, invariably it is
the machine that suffers. Such is the
case with businessman Manuel Ferreira.
Ferreira thought that he would get away
with running an illegal slot machine in
the Explorer’s Plaza downtown.
Ferreira was running illegal slot
machines at Manny's Liquor Store
downtown. The prosecution said that
although they had a legal liquor
license, they did not have a license for
the slot machines. They said that they
have several other businesses that are
similar cases, where they have a license
for one thing but are doing something
else that they do not have a license
for.
In
addition to Ferreira four others were
charged with possession of slot
machines; permitting the premises to be
used for lottery; and permitting the
premises to promote, organize or conduct
a lottery. Later, the prosecution
dropped all of the charges except the
possession of slot machines and the
court ordered that the machines be
destroyed. Ferreira was then discharged.
The
prosecution issued a reminder to the
public that slot machines and gambling
are illegal, and if you choose to
participate in this form of activity,
you will be arrested. The slot machines
have since been destroyed in compliance
with court orders. Police say that they
have already arrested more than 70
people in connection with these illegal
activities, and will continue to do so.
