Maryland Ban
is Bad for Education
Maryland’s
schools are concerned about a ban on
machines that resemble slot machines.
The state ban on a machine that has
become instrumental in the amount of
money that comes into the state’s
schools is seriously hurting them.
Allegany
County’s
Gaming Administrator says that the
machines that are currently being banned
are not slot machines, but that they do
a lot of good for the school. He said
that the state ban on electronic
gambling machines will lead to a
decrease in revenue for the education
system in the state. He said that the
state’s schools will get roughly
$170,000 less this year than they got
last year.
In
addition, local fire and police will get
$57,000 less – leaving them in an
economic crisis as well. They say that
the solution is easy – the legislature
simply needs to correct the ban on the
electronic games, or make it more
specific to what defines a slot machine
so that they can continue offering them.
The
slot machine type games dispensed pull
tabs, which is a popular form of
gambling in the area. The problem is
that with slot machine parlors coming in
across the state, their government wants
to make sure that there is nothing that
interferes with that move. As their
county is one of those that is scheduled
to get a slot machine parlor it is even
more important that they get rid of the
games. However, the only people who are
really suffering from the move is the
schools.
