Revenue Drop
The
problem is that states see slot machine
revenues as a quick fix to their
budgetary problems. This is not the
case. Originally
Atlantic City and Las Vegas had their slot
machines and people travelled to see
them. They made a nice amount of revenue
off of the slot machines and thus their
states were pleased. However, this is no
longer the case. Both of those cities
have found themselves in states that are
surrounded by other states that have
since brought in slot machines, and now
they see their revenues have drastically
dropped.
But it
is not just them that are feeling the
pinch - as more a more slot machines
come in, those existing slot machines
are finding that their revenues are
dropping. Across the country there has
been a 2.6% drop as compared to last
year in gambling. Many areas of the
country, like the Northeast, have been
so oversaturated with slot machines that
there aren't enough people to play them.
Places where there used to be lines of
people waiting to play, those lines
don't exist anymore.
Not
only that, but with the ability to play
slot machines online, some people are
not going to the tracks or casinos at
all. What was once a sure moneymaker has
become something that you cannot count
on to bring in a steady revenue.
There
are states that are still bringing in
slot machines, as they see the success
that their neighbors have had with them.
However, they are basing their revenue
goals on what would have been had no one
else brought in slot machines as well.
The question now is whether or not the
slot machines are worth their while.
